Saint Lucia's new head coach has a familiar face in his corner for the biggest week of his tenure so far. Rajesh Latchoo has brought in Earl "Ball Hog" Jean as part of his new backroom staff, St. Lucia Times reported, with the appointment landing just days before Saint Lucia's Concacaf Nations League double-header against Barbados and Bermuda at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground.
Who Is Earl Jean
Jean, born Earl Jude Jean, is one of the most prolific players Saint Lucia has produced. Nicknamed "The Flea", he scored 20 goals in 23 caps for the national team between 1990 and 2004, one of the more remarkable strike rates in the country's football history. His playing career took him through England's professional pyramid, spells at Ipswich Town, Rotherham United and Plymouth Argyle among them, and he was Rotherham's leading scorer in the 1996/97 season.
The bulk of his career was built at W Connection in Trinidad and Tobago, where he scored 45 goals across three separate spells. After retiring in 2009, he moved into coaching at the same club, working as assistant coach alongside Stuart Charles Fevrier, himself a former Saint Lucia national team head coach.
What Wasn't Said
St. Lucia Times' report doesn't specify exactly what Jean's role will be, whether he's coaching forwards, working across the squad more broadly, or something else entirely. Offside758 could not find that detail confirmed anywhere else at time of writing. Until the SLFA or Latchoo says more, that's simply not known.
The Timing
Latchoo took over from Francis Lastic days before the Barbados opener, inheriting a squad with barely any time to adjust to a new voice, and now hands the frontline some fresh direction of its own with Jean on the touchline. Whether that translates to sharper finishing this week is exactly the kind of thing that shows up in a scoreline rather than a press report. Saint Lucia haven't been short of attacking talent in this squad. Whether they convert it against Barbados today and Bermuda on Monday is the actual test.
Offside758 will update this if Jean's specific role is confirmed.
