Four days before kickoff, Saint Lucia's own squad list had Kegan Caull down as Unattached. No club next to his name, unlike the Montego Bay United tag sitting next to two of his teammates on the same sheet. Against Bermuda at the Daren Sammy Cricket Ground, he scored a perfect hat-trick, header, right foot, left foot, inside twenty minutes.
The Question We Asked
When Caull left Hashtag United for Montego Bay United, this site asked a simple question: would the move actually help him with Saint Lucia's coaching staff, or just look good on paper. The answer, we suggested at the time, would come from the next squad list, inclusion and minutes on the pitch against Barbados and Bermuda.
The coaching staff has since changed twice. Francis Lastic, who was meant to name that squad, didn't get the chance. Rajesh Latchoo took over three days before the opener and named it instead.
Unattached, Not Unselected
By the time Latchoo's squad list appeared, Caull had already left Montego Bay United. The club tag next to his name read Unattached, on the same list that had Vino Barclett and Melvin Doxilly down as Montego Bay United players. Offside758 has not established why, or where he's expected to sign next. The squad list itself is the only public confirmation of his situation right now.
Whatever the Montego Bay move did for him, it wasn't a current club shirt doing the talking against Bermuda.
Latchoo's First Win
Saint Lucia had opened the window with a 2-0 defeat to Barbados. Three days later, with no club to Caull's name and a head coach barely a week into the job, Latchoo got his first result as Saint Lucia boss: a 5-2 win, the Piton Boyz's first of this Nations League campaign.
A Perfect Hat-Trick
Caull did most of the damage himself. A header from a corner in the 15th minute, a sharp finish three minutes later, and a third in the 35th, header, right foot, left foot, the full set inside twenty minutes. Shevon Byron added a fourth in the 53rd, and Kurt Frederick a fifth in the 68th. Bermuda's reply, through Ajani Burchall (45+1') and Riley Robinson (70'), came too late to matter. Saint Lucia move up to third in the group, a point behind Barbados and Guadeloupe. Bermuda sit bottom without a point from two matches.
Caull didn't need a club crest to make his case. He needed a matchday.
So, Has It Paid Off?
Not in the way the original question assumed. The Montego Bay United move itself can't take credit for a performance delivered while he was unattached to any club at all. But the deeper bet behind that move, that regular first-team football somewhere, anywhere, would keep him sharp enough to matter to the national team, looks entirely vindicated.
Latchoo picked him with no club to his name and put him in the side. Caull repaid that with the best individual performance of the window. The open question now isn't whether the move to Jamaica helped his standing with Saint Lucia. It's who signs him next, and how quickly.
