Saint Lucia is about to do something it has never done before, and neither has anyone else. The country's Under-15 boys have been selected for the inaugural FIFA Under-15 Boys World Cup and Festival, running October 22 to 31 in Baku, Azerbaijan, the first time FIFA has ever run this event.
The Format
Twenty-five players have been training over the past month, according to St. Lucia Times, with the squad to be cut to a final 14 before travel. FIFA is covering flights and accommodation. The tournament itself is built around small-sided games rather than full 11-a-side matches, organised in balanced tiers so nations at different development stages are matched appropriately rather than simply thrown into open competition.
Voice St. Lucia reported that Saint Lucia has been drawn into Group N, alongside Aruba, Croatia, Greece, Palestine and Yemen.
Who's Taking Them
FIFA talent-identification coach Michael McLaughlin has been working with the group and praised their discipline and eagerness to learn, per St. Lucia Times. Most of the pool comes through the Saint Lucia Football Association's High Performance Centre, and many of the same players featured in this year's Caribbean Football Union Under-14 Boys' Challenge.
Why It Matters Beyond October
This is a genuinely new opportunity, not a smaller version of an existing one. FIFA has never run this tournament before, and Saint Lucia is in the first-ever field. That's a real marker for a footballing nation this size, regardless of how the small-sided games themselves go.
It also lands right alongside new Technical Director Miran Louis's own stated priority of building from the grassroots up. Whatever else is unresolved about his appointment, an Under-15 squad about to debut at a first-ever FIFA event is a concrete example of the pipeline he's talking about actually producing something.
What's Next
FIFA has also flagged plans for a girls' version of the tournament in 2027, with both editions becoming annual from 2028. For now, the immediate story is simpler: 14 of Saint Lucia's Under-15 boys are going to Azerbaijan for a tournament that, until this year, didn't exist.
